Ashley Tisdale Admits ‘Merry, Happy,Whatever’ Was One Of Her ‘Most FulfillingRoles’: I Got To Be In The Moment

The new Netflix series ‘Merry, Happy, Whatever’ shows Ashley Tisdale in impressive moments of comedy & emotion. She spoke to HL about her latest role.

Ashley Tisdale takes on the holiday season as a newly single woman who is in the process of discovering her true self — while dealing with her family of wildly different personalities, of course! In the Netflix sitcom Merry, Happy, Whatever, Ashley stars as Kayla Quinn, the middle daughter of the Quinn family, led by their strong-willed, tough-loving father Don, played by the icon that is Dennis Quaid. Early in the series, Kayla’s husband stuns her by demanding a divorce (in front of her whole family), which leads Kayla down a road of self-discovery, which ends in an emotional moment when she comes out as gay to her family. Interestingly, Ashley, along with the rest of the cast, was unaware of her character’s arc and “figured out who she was as the same time.”

“I only knew the first episode because Tucker [Cawley] wouldn’t let us in on what was going to happen with our characters, which is really cool because sometimes if you know the arc of the character, you’re almost a couple steps ahead. Whereas I got to be in the moment with her trying to figure it out,” Ashley explained in an EXCLUSIVE interview with “She’s trying to figure out who she is and she’s in a self-identity crisis. I was trying to figure out who she was at the same time as well, so it was kind of like we did it together.”

“But I have to say, yeah, it was one of the most fulfilling acting roles that I’ve really ever gotten to do because I think a lot of the roles that I have done in the past have been very strong characters and they know who they are and there isn’t this, ‘Who am I?’ That’s what I usually bring to a role because I’m pretty confident person and I really know what I like, I know what I want,” Ashley continued, referencing her previous roles such as the determined Sharpay Evans in High School Musical and Maddie Fitzpatrick in Suite Life Of Zack and Cody. “With Kayla, it was just such a different situation where I got to really add things in there.”

Ashley revealed that she found out about her character’s story arc when she was tipped off by someone in wardrobe who dished that they would need to cut her hair mid-season. “I feel like there hasn’t really been anything on TV where the journey of someone finding out that they are gay is documented. I think that was really different,” she explained. “I really cared about Kayla and I really respected her as a character, and I wanted to do [the coming out scene] in the most in the most authentic way.”

The actress added that playing the role “means so much” to her. “Acting is all about being someone else and getting into someone else’s shoes, so to jump into Kayla’s shoes and to go through something I’ve never gone through in my life was really inspiring and beautiful I really was excited to share that,” Ashley said.

27 Things We Learned On Set With Ashley Tisdale

1. First, if anyone could play you in a movie, who would you pick?
Lili Reinhart. I do think we look similar, and I love her. I’m a big fan of hers.
2. What’s the last TV show you binge-watched?
The Morning Show.
3. Who’s the last person that texted you?
Elizabeth Ho from Merry Happy Whatever.
4. What’s your biggest fear?
Hmm… I don’t know. I don’t tend to have huge fears. I’m a little fearless, I guess.
5. What is your most-used emoji, and why?
Most-used is the crying/laughing face 😂, because I’m always laughing.
6. Who’s your celebrity doppelgänger?
I probably have to say Lili [Reinhart], right? I never noticed it, except fans always tweet about it. Her and Brittany Murphy.
7. Go-to comfort food and why?
My go-to comfort food would probably be Thai food. I don’t really eat a lot of carbs, so when I do, I want pad thai. It’s just so comforting.
8. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Coffee, because I love it too much.
9. What’s the last thing you searched on Google?
Actually a thunder jacket for [my dog Ziggy].
10. Who was your celeb crush growing up?
Probably Leonardo DiCaprio. I remember a People Magazine photoshoot of him — he was just in a black t-shirt and it was this blue background. I had it up on my wall and it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
11. What’s the first album you bought?
The Britney Spears single “…Baby One More Time.”
12. What’s the most starstruck you’ve ever been?
Probably when I met Jennifer Aniston.

13. What’s the wildest rumor you’ve ever heard about yourself?
I remember Zac [Efron] came to my birthday party — and me and Zac are like brother and sister. He was being all lovey-dovey and we were hanging out, but the paparazzi just got pictures of us. It looked like it was just us, but it was so many people and my boyfriend was at the birthday party. I think the rumor was we were dating and I was like, “This is so dumb.”
14. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?
To not take anything personally. It could be not getting the job, to someone saying the wrong thing to you — it’s just so much better to kind of separate yourself from it, and you won’t get hurt by it.
15. What’s the last book you read?
I’ve actually read it twice. It’s called Your Power to Heal. I got it when I was in Big Sur after my dog had passed. I didn’t know, but it’s actually a book about taking back your power over any type of disease or anxiety, and that we are not victims to disease, we actually could heal ourselves. And so I really liked that idea. It teaches you how to heal yourself when you’re going through something. I think it’s really amazing. It really has helped with just little symptoms of back aches and neck [pain], like all of that stuff. You just talk to your body and your body kind of responds too it’s pretty cool.
